DRESS BLUES

Jennifer Mejia

Dress blues is a term that refers to the dress uniform of U.S. service men and women. You might also have dress blues of another kind if you are down about not having enough dresses you like in your wardrobe. But today, it means I’m sharing my favorite blue dresses presently available for purchase. Because while most women know they need the LBD (“Little Black Dress”) in their closet, I feel strongly that you need a blue one, as well. Why? Because blue speaks “business” more than black does. Blue is formal, as is black, but sometimes black can be read as sexy or somber (not at the same time!) Blue is crisp and polished.

This dress I’m wearing in the cover photo is from The Fold London and is sold out. But I had to show it because its fit is absolutely amazing! And there’s nothing better than a great fitting silhouette. It’s feminine, flattering, and sharp, and conservative enough to wear to a business event. Take some time to check out their current collection—this blue dress is one of my new favorites. And lucky for you, I’ve curated the collection below if you have the dress blues—meaning, you don’t have a favorite blue dress hanging in your closet. Every woman needs one. I’m always here to help. WERK IT WITH THE WORK DRESS

I love a polished sheath dress for work. It’s polished and professional yet totally feminine. No one does a sheath dress better than Victoria Beckham. Some of frocks, such as the red number pictured below, are a little too sexy for the office, but even with a little cleavage showing, they’re still very classy, in my opinion. If I had to choose one person whose dress wardrobe I’d like to pilfer, it would be the gal formerly known as Posh Spice. And if your pockets are deep enough, you can dress like her because she has her own line of clothing. There’s only one problem: I can’t afford a closet filled with Victoria Beckham’s label.

So when I find a good dress at a more affordable price, it’s worth the investment. Because I think a classic sheath is something that never goes out of style. And if that sheath has a bit of a flare to make it anything but boring, then that is just the greatest thing since sliced bread. As luck would have it, Instagram’s sponsored posts have done a decent job of targeting lately. This dress I’m wearing is from a company called The Fold I discovered a few months ago. The company is based in London, but you don’t have to travel across the pond to get this look because they ship worldwide. And shipping is free to the U.S. Returns are also free, but I doubt you’ll want to do that once you slip into it.

Here’s what I love about this dress. The Italian stretch wool crepe is an amazing quality. Upon taking it out of the box, which traveled across the ocean, it had just a few wrinkles. But after hanging it in my closet and then in the bathroom while I showered for 10 minutes, they all disappeared. After wearing it, I hung it up, and the next day, the wrinkles were gone. It’s lining has a beautiful silky feel against your skin. The gorgeous detail around the neckline gives it that unforgettableness. The fit is amazing…as good as Victoria Beckham’s line but at a price that is about 5 times lower.

The best part about this dress is that it’s versatile. And it’s timeless. You can wear it to work. I have a few important meetings coming up, and I wanted a new dress to take it up a notch. Sort of the modern day version of a power suit. But I can also envision wearing it to a wedding as a guest. A baptism. A cocktail party. This was my favorite dress from the line, but I’m listing a few others that I think would be fantastic on. I’m wearing a UK Size 6, which is like a US Size 0. In addition to beautiful dresses from The Fold, I’m also offering a few options from some of your favorite retailers that are a little closer to home. Simply click on the images below to shop.
