THE MINI DRESS OVER 40

During the Love Shack Fancy x Target launch, I went out on a limb and purchased a mini dress. And it seemed very mini to me. I tried it on with heels because let’s face it, heels make your legs look slimmer and longer, of course. But as quickly as I put it on, I took it off. At the ripe young age of 46, I don’t have any business wearing a mini dress. I feared that when I wore it that people would look at me and wonder, “Who’s that cougar and who is she trying to pick up?”

About a week later, I went to the beach and saw a group of women who were my age and older sitting on a blanket and chatting. When they got up to leave, one was wearing a mini dress with flats and had bloomers of sort underneath. And it looked cute. She wasn’t trying to pick up anyone. It was a casual beachy look. She wasn’t trying too hard. I’d been doing it all wrong. Heels with a mini was not the answer for me. Flat sandals with my mini would be the only way I could make it work.

What do you think? Am I too old to wear a mini dress? If so, what’s the age cut-off? In my opinion, the key is to wear the appropriate style in the right place and with appropriate shoes and accessories. If you’re over 40, my opinion is you should not wear a mini dress with heels out at night. Unless you want to be a topic of discussion. Keep it casual, daytime, wear flat shoes like these from Alexandre Birman (also in gold), and make sure it’s not tight. The skirt should flare out and give you room to move. And wear full undies…boy shorts or bloomers…in case someone gets a peek.
